Keep reading to find out everything you need to know about bulletproof coffee and I’ll give you 16 amazing bulletproof coffee recipes that will blow your mind.

What Is Bulletproof Coffee?

Bulletproof Coffee - What Is Bulletproof Coffee

In its simplest form, bulletproof coffee is a combination of black coffee, MCT oil (medium-chain triglyceride), and unsalted grass-fed butter or ghee.

Now that might sound like an odd combination, and I’d have to agree with you. But once you taste its rich and creamy goodness it’ll all make sense.

Bulletproof coffee was created by biohacker Dave Asprey who created the Bulletproof brand. Its whole purpose is to give you the energy boost you need, without the caffeine crashes. It’s targeted towards anyone who wants to get more done. It complements several diets such as low-carb, paleo, keto, intermittent fasting, and OMAD (one meal a day). It is also known as keto coffee or butter coffee.

Why Should I Drink Bulletproof Coffee?

I’m sure after seeing that ingredient list you’re not convinced yet. So let me get into all of the amazing reasons why you should try bulletproof coffee.

  1. Helps to maintain higher energy levels for longer.
  2. Increase your mental clarity and focus.
  3. Feel fuller for longer.
  4. Can help you lose weight.
  5. A great addition to keto, paleo, low-carb, intermittent fasting diets.
  6. Tastes amazing!

How Does It Work?

how does bulletproof coffee work

The main ingredient of bulletproof coffee is of course coffee. The caffeine in coffee will give you an energy boost and improve your focus. Other than keeping you alert, it can boost your metabolism which may promote fat burning.

Coffee also includes a load of minerals and antioxidants that may help to prevent some diseases. It is always recommended that you use freshly ground coffee beans for maximum flavor.

Drinking regular coffee can lead to concentration and energy fluctuations throughout the day. This is why you may find yourself topping up your cup every hour, on the hour.

This brings me to my next point… What sets bulletproof coffee apart is its use of high-quality fats. Fats do a great job of subduing your cravings and increasing your brain function.

One of these is unsalted grass-fed butter or ghee. These are nutrient-dense fats that include healthy fatty acids and minerals such as Omega-3. Which can increase cognitive function.

Grass-fed butter contains almost 5 times more CLA (conjugated linoleic acid) than grain-fed butter. Why is that important? CLA helps your body to break down fats and this can help with weight loss.

The next healthy fat is MCT oil. It’s made up of fatty acids that can be broken down easily and quickly by your body. This is because of the shorter chain length on a molecular level. This means they can go straight to the liver and be absorbed quicker to produce ketones.

Ketones are an alternative energy source for the brain. They can pass directly from the blood to the brain. Energy for brain function is usually reliant upon the glucose you receive from carbohydrates and fats being broken down. So if you’re following a low-carb diet it can do wonders for keeping those cravings at bay, reducing brain fog, and staying energized.

Common Bulletproof Coffee Mistakes

common bulletproof coffee mistakes

Mistake 1 – Adding Sugar

One of the reasons why bulletproof coffee is good for you is because it reduces your intake of carbs and sugars whilst still tasting great. By adding sugar it may taste too sweet.

Also, your body will skip the process of ketogenesis and won’t produce ketones to give you that boost of energy you’re looking for. If you do prefer a sweeter coffee there are many alternatives such as Stevia.

Mistake 2 – Not Using MCT Oil

The MCT oil is a key ingredient to give you the mental clarity and energy boost you want. Without it, you’ll miss out on a lot of healthy fats too.

Mistake 3 – Using Instant Coffee

Freshly roasted and ground beans are always ideal for the best-tasting coffee. For optimal results, you want to go for freshly ground organic Arabica beans.

Mistake 4 – Not Using A Blender

A blender is essential for bulletproof coffee. It is the only way to get a smooth and even texture. Oils and butter are hydrophobic and a blender is great for pulling everything together. Without a blender, you may get lumps or your coffee may taste too oily or buttery.

Mistake 5 – Starting With Full Doses

When using MCT oil and butter, you will need to start with small amounts and build them up over time. If you start too strong you may get tummy aches, so let your body get used to it gradually. Adjust the amount of butter and oil to your tastes too. If you don’t like creamy coffee you may want to use less oil and butter.

Mistake 6 – Using Coconut Oil Instead Of MCT Oil

MCT oil is a derivative of coconut oil that has shorter molecular chains. Coconut oil does contain MCTs but less in comparison. The chain length is longer so it is not an easily accessible energy source for the body. This means it takes longer to be broken down. To get the most out of your bulletproof coffee always use MCT oil.
